Dental Crowns

Crowns are artificial caps, usually made of a porcelain-like material, that are placed on top of a tooth. Crowns are commonly used to restore functionality and the appearance of a tooth after a restorative procedure, such as a root canal. They are installed when tooth decay has become advanced enough that the majority of the tooth needs to be removed.

Dental crowns can also be used to cover dental implants, attach bridges, stop a cracked tooth from worsening, or to stop an already existing filling from becoming dislocated or loose. They can also be applied when a discolored or stained tooth needs to be restored to its natural color.

Dental Crown Procedures

In order to properly accommodate a crown, a tooth usually gets reduced in size. An impression is made of the existing tooth, with it being sent to a lab afterwards. This lab manufactures a customized crown and, in a certain situations, a temporary crown is applied until the permanent crown is complete. The permanent crown is then cemented in place.

Crowns are occasionally confused with veneers, but they are different. Veneers are usually only applied to relatively small areas.
